Do what I say, not what I… What was I saying?

The background: At a recent Saturday swim meet, Row’s coach commented on the amount of time it took to track Row down for his races.

The scene: Wednesday Night Swim Meet

The action: Row is sent to the “clerk of course” - but loses his way - twice. So Tim and I physically walk with him all the way there, and I stand with my hand on his shoulder to make sure he doesn’t walk away. Then, it’s time to go to his lane. Tim says,

We don’t have to hold his hand, let’s just trail a ways behind him and make sure he gets there.

Tim and I get to talking.

Five minutes later, I exclaim:

Oh my God! Where’s Row??? We were supposed to be walking him to his lane!!!!

Tim,

Oh crap! He’s gone. Did we seriously forget we were following him?

I look around in panic.

Oh. He’s actually in his lane. He made it! Good thing he didn’t need us to get him there… I wonder how come he’s had so much trouble getting where he’s supposed to be?!
