Methods of Procrastination 1: Socks

I should be doing laundry. Or making entries in our checkbook. (Wait, scratch that, we don’t even have a checkbook anymore. I guess I should be developing a checkbook.) I could be cleaning out the scary “catch-all” laundry basket sitting next to my desk. Instead, I’ve taken up sock knitting (I use this program to make some of the patterns).

All in all, it’s a very bizarre enterprise. The needles look crazy. And, what is the benefit of a hand-knitted sock, anyway? I’m quite sure they won’t last as long as a machine-made and reinforced sock. If they aren’t lost first.

Nonetheless, I knitted some for Tim , Non, and Row.

Then I knitted some for my friend T (I made a very cool pattern out of this book), who watches the kids every Friday and takes them to swim practice. It seemed like a nice way to say thank you for hanging out with my kids, unpaid, out of the goodness of her heart.

Then, the swim coach gave Row the “Coaches Award” at the end-of-the-year banquet last week. In his short speech, the coach clearly got Row – in all his glory. He wasn’t saying things to pacify, he wasn’t glossing over that he can be tough sometimes, but he totally and completely recognized his strengths, his joy, and his fun. I thought the darling swim coach needed something special to show how grateful I am – but what could I do in the three days remaining in the season? Ah-ha! Knit him some socks – well, sock, actually. I gave him one on Friday, the last day of practice. Told him if he wanted the other he’d have to tell us how to contact him. Neat trick, huh? So, I just finished the second one. Wonder how long it will take me to mail it?

I have decided my friends A & J need socks, too, for their birthdays. Which were last week. Being past the deadline means I really have to work fast. Indeed, it seems totally justified to neglect other things, because now I’m late, right? This is J’s one sock. Now I’ve started on A’s as well. (A’s sock pattern also comes from this book .)
